The Book of Eli
By ETEditor
☺☺ ½ Not Quite
There’ve been many movies about post-apocalyptic America. The Book of Eli takes an approach different from any I’ve seen before, which should be good but, unfortunately, it turns out just a little bit dry.
The movie starts with the world in complete anarchy. Eli (Denzel Washington) walks across country, unfazed by the destruction, with a backpack, a short sword, KFC towelettes and his book. He’s spent the past 30 years, determined to deliver his book to the place that needs it. The place is somewhere West. His book is the last Bible on earth.
Because Eli seems much more civilized and educated than the others, he sticks out like a sore thumb. He carries a book when most people in the fractured world can’t even read. But Carnagie (Gary Oldman), the so-called ruler of this anarchy, can read and he’s searching for a way to tame his out-of-control town. He’s searching for Eli’s book. When Eli shows up with the book, Carnagie tries to force him to turn it over. Eli stands his ground and kills anyone that gets in the way of his journey to the West.
Even though The Book of Eli has a surprise ending, I’m afraid it’s not enough to save the movie. It’s like you’ll know where the Hughes brothers (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents) were trying to go, but you’ll also know that they don’t quite make it there. It’s a shame because the movie had the potential to be a powerful metaphor for today’s leaders and the world as a whole. Better luck, next time.
